Dusting it Off in the New Year

If you are reading this and thinking, “It has been a minute,” you are not wrong.

Over the past year, I made an intentional decision to take little break from my Masters program for two semesters to focus on completing the coursework required for my merchant mariner’s license renewal. The break from school also gave me some time to rethink my education goals and how I want my personal and professional learning to show up in my work.

This site has been a little quiet, but it has not been lost or forgotten. A new year feels like a natural time to check in, dust it off, and put it back to good use.

What Is Ahead

As part of this new year refresh, I am excited to say that there are a few projects currently in the works:

Designing My Own Curriculum

The more you create, the more powerful you become. The more you cosume, the more powerful others become.

Inspired by the above quote from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, one of my goals for this year is to be more deliberate about creating, not just consuming. I decided to start building my own curriculum for myself focused on instructional design, ed tech, and adult learning.

Designing curriculum about learning to design curriculum all while being the designer, teacher, and learner at the same time has been an interesting experience, to say the least. My hope is that some of this development work will live here and help build my portfolio along the way.

A New Episode of Steal Like an Artist

A new Steal Like an Artist podcast episode is in the works. In the vein of developing my own curriculum, I was inspired by a professional development talk I gave a few years ago on the topic of Upskilling. I plan to refresh this presentation and feature it as an episode of the podcast.

If you’re not familiar with upskilling or reskilling, here’s a solid introduction.

February Quick Clicks

Quick Clicks is also returning for February with a structured self-imposed challenge:

28 Discoveries in 28 Days

If you know me, you know I love lists! For the entire month of February, I plan to share one discovery each day related to instructional design, ed tech, adult learning, and other adjacent ideas worth exploring. In order to help develop my own curriculum for my instructional design journey, I am gathering resources. I look forward to sharing these with you next month in the form of Quick Clicks!

In general, you can also expect more regular updates here. Some posts will be reflective, some practical, and some will be drafts in progress as I continue learning and building.

If you have been quietly following along, thank you. If you are new here, welcome. A new year felt like the right time to clear the dust, set a few new goals, and start creating again. I know this is only one post, but it sure feels good! I look forward to “seeing” you here again soon.
